Soft Gel vs Hard Gel: Mixing Nail Systems the Right Way

Soft Gel vs Hard Gel: Can You Mix Systems?

One of the most common questions we receive from nail technicians is whether soft gel can be used over hard gel, or vice versa. The answer is not a simple yes or no — it depends on which products you are using and how they are applied.

At Planet Nails, our product range is specifically formulated to work together, but understanding the role each product plays in your system is essential for achieving lasting, high-quality results. Let us break it down.

Understanding the Planet Nails Product Range

Lastik & Lastik HF

These are a hybrid combination of a rubber base and a soft builder gel — which makes them unique in the market. They can be used as a base coat under any Planet Nails system to improve retention, as a soft builder gel for short natural overlays where flexibility is needed, or applied as a thin colour coat over any system, just like a gel polish.

Stick 'n Float

Stick 'n Float is a rubber base only. It is not a builder gel. It can be used as a base coat under any of our systems, providing excellent adhesion and flexibility at the foundation of your application.

PUG (Hard / File-Off)

PUG is our hard-curing, file-off builder gel. It delivers strength and structure, making it ideal for extensions and clients who need maximum durability.

PLUS (Soak-Off)

PLUS is our harder-curing, soak-off builder gel. It offers additional strength compared to softer builders while remaining removable with acetone.

The Golden Rule: Mixing Systems

The most important thing to understand when working with Planet Nails products is the relationship between soft and hard builders when it comes to infills.

If PUG or PLUS has been filed down to a very thin layer and a soft builder gel is then applied over the top, or if these products are applied in overly thin layers, the result will be cracking and chipping. The structural integrity of harder-curing products relies on adequate thickness — without it, the softer layer applied over the top cannot bond correctly.

The Planet Nails System Rules

Yes

You can infill a soft builder with a hard builder — but only once the existing soft layer has been de-bulked down to approximately 10%.

No

You cannot apply a soft builder over a hard builder that has been filed thin. This will result in cracking and chipping.

Following these guidelines ensures the structural integrity of your application is maintained throughout the wear period, reducing callbacks and keeping your clients happy.

Why Does This Matter?

Understanding your product system is the foundation of consistent, professional results. When technicians mix systems without this knowledge, it leads to service breakdowns that are difficult to diagnose — and frustrating for both the technician and the client. Getting this right from the start means stronger nails, better retention, and a reputation built on reliability.
