Planet Gel Polish Essentials — Base Coats & Top Coats

Base Coat The Planet Gel Polish Base Coat is the long-lasting foundation for your gel polish manicure. Easy to apply and quick to soak off, it can also be used for art effects including blooming gel, partial foil transfers, and burnishing fine glitters or pigments into its tacky layer. Also great for nail art techniques like blooming effects, marbling and chrome encapsulation. Soak-off formula. Dual cure: 60 seconds (405nm LED) or 2 minutes (365nm UV).

Stick 'n Float Rubber Base A bonder base gel for clients who need longer-lasting gel polish wear. Provides optimum adhesion, especially for nails prone to lifting. The thicker viscosity flexes with the nail to prevent peeling and chipping. Recommended for clients with oily skin, oily nails or sweaty hands. HEMA-free and Methacrylate-free. Can be used as a rubber base under all PN enhancement systems. Use instead of Lastik with the Planet Vogue system for a fully HEMA-free option. Soak-off formula. Dual cure: 60 seconds (405nm LED) or 2 minutes (365nm UV).

True Matte Top Coat The ultimate matte top coat. Delivers super smooth, even matte coverage with a soft velvet-like touch finish. Stain resistant so it can be used safely over light colours. Great for nail art designs. No-wipe, tack-free formula. Soak-off formula. Dual cure: 60 seconds (405nm LED) or 2 minutes (365nm UV).

Stain Resistant Top Coat Say goodbye to stains. This no-wipe top coat holds up against cigarettes, makeup, spray tan and hair dye. Thin consistency prevents bulk and helps prolong the wear of any enhancement. Non-yellowing formula makes nail designs pop. Protects and seals to a glass-like finish. HEMA-free and Methacrylate-free. Soak-off formula. Dual cure: 60 seconds (405nm LED) or 2 minutes (365nm UV).

Luxe Gloss Top Coat We had to call this one Luxe Gloss — and you'll see why. The glaze-like consistency hides imperfections and cures without a tacky layer, making it perfect for chrome effect nails. The thicker formula makes encapsulating nail art easy and helps smooth out any bumps or dips. Protects and seals to a glass-like finish. HEMA-free and completely Methacrylate-free. Soak-off formula. Dual cure: 60 seconds (405nm LED) or 2 minutes (365nm UV).

Wrinkling or uncured gel polish is normally an indication that the gel polish hadn't fully cured. This can be due to applying the colour too thick, not curing for long enough, improper hand placement in the lamp, or the lamp being old or weak and not emitting enough UV power to fully cure the colour. This tends to be most prevalent with highly pigmented colours, one-coat colours, or dark colours like black.

To troubleshoot: if the issue is only happening on thumbs or pinkies, the problem is most likely hand placement — educate your client on correct lamp positioning, or have them cure their thumbs separately and flat. If the issue is happening on all fingers with the same colour, try applying thinner coats and curing for an extra 15-30 seconds. If you've tried everything, the colour may not be fully compatible with your lamp's LED wavelength — try the UV cure time instead, which is normally 2-3 minutes per coat for highly pigmented or dark colours.

In summary: apply dark and highly pigmented colours in thin coats, ensure correct hand placement, cure thumbs separately and flat if needed, and add an extra 15-30 seconds to your cure time for these shades.

Pitting most commonly occurs with top coat application but can also happen with colour. The most common causes are:

  1. The tacky layer has been removed from the colour coat before top coat is applied — lightly buff the colour coat before applying top coat.
  2. The colour coat cures without a tacky layer, causing it to cure too glossy — wipe the nail with alcohol and apply a primer that dries tacky, like Sticky Bond, to the sides and free edge before top coat.
  3. The nails were contaminated between colour and top coat by touching the nails, hair, face, or items in a bag or pocket — wipe the colour coat with alcohol and lightly buff before applying top coat.
  4. The tacky layer from your colour coat isn't compatible with your top coat, which can happen when mixing brands — remove the tacky layer and lightly buff the colour coat before applying top coat.

If you've already cured and the pitting has set, gently file and buff the pits flat, dust well and reapply top coat. It shouldn't pit again on a buffed surface.

The nails are cracking: a hard gel top coat will lead to cracking if applied over a soft or flexible enhancement like gel polish mani’s, a Lastik Overlay or Soft Gel Extensions.

Nails aren’t shiny after curing: Try curing for a little bit longer- We recommend curing top coats for 60-90seconds, if your lamp is older or the watts are lower you may need to cure it for a bit longer. Also be mindful of allowing your top coat to cool after curing before applying cuticle oil as this can dull the shine too.

Nails aren’t soaking off in acetone: The top coat used may be a hard gel or acetone resistant top coat – the top coat layer needs to be filed off before the colour and base will soften.

How to Get a Neon Gel Polish to Pop in Only 2 Coats

Getting neons to look vibrant and opaque can be tricky — here's the trick:

Step 1: Use a one-coat white like Ella Zala Art White as your first coat and cure. Step 2: Apply a thin even coat of your chosen neon colour and cure. Step 3: Apply your favourite PN top coat and cure. The difference is remarkable.

Tips on How to Get Your Polish Nice and Close to the Skin Without Touching

Tip 1: Push back the skin folds again just before you apply your polish. Skin folds tend to relax back down during the service, so doing this right before polish application makes a big difference.

Tip 2: Use a liner brush to get even closer to the skin after you've applied to the full nail. This lets you refine the edge without touching the skin.

How to Get a Streaky Gel Polish to Apply Perfectly in Just 2 Coats

Some colours — particularly whites, pastels and sheer shades — can be streaky. Here's how to fix it:

Step 1: Apply your first coat slightly thicker than you normally would — don't cure. Step 2: Pour a milky white or soft nude acrylic powder over the wet gel polish and cure. Step 3: Dust well, then apply your second coat of colour and cure. Step 4: Apply your favourite PN top coat and cure. Luxe Gloss works beautifully for this technique.
